Flower season is almost here! Flowers can bring in wonderful butterfly visitors. Today is a day that highlights educating yourself about butterflies.
Butterfly facts:
- There are more than 20,000 types of butterflies worldwide.
- Their wing spans can range from 1/2 inch to 11 inches.
- Butterflies in their adult stage can live from a week to nearly a year, depending on the species.
- Many butterflies migrate over long distances. Particularly famous migrations are those of the Monarch butterfly from Mexico to the northern USA and southern Canada, a distance of about 2500 to 3000 miles.
How to Observe:
National Calendar - read about them or go find a nice spot to butterfly watch.
Butterfly Friendly Flowers:
If you want butterfly visitors plant nectar and pollen rich flowers. Keep your gardening pesticides butterfly friendly or figure out 'natural' methods that don't hurt butterflies. This ensures at least a few friends popping in.
Bee balm, Phlox, Zinnia, Lavender, Daylily, Cosmos are just a few flowers that can help bring visiting butterflies. There's way more out there these are just a few I typed in.
Now for books that include Butterflies on their book cover. Whether they educate you on butterflies or not..ehh.
