#SpoonsNbooks: 2018 a Book of a Year

It's the second day of the new year. Tomorrow I go back to work and fantasy about the next vacation time we have. Don't get me wrong -- I love my job and what I do but I love not doing anything even more.

The first half of 2018 I was giving up on becoming a teacher. I graduated in December of 2016 and wasn't gainfully employed like almost everyone I knew was. It was frustrating.

So, I decided to join Netgalley and start blogging more about the books I'm reading. I was already book blogging and reading book blogs but this time I was going to go full in.

Plus, I had no job so there wasn't a whole lot I was doing anyway.

July came around we decided to move out of the house. I was worried because once again -- I was the only person in this relationship not employed. My boyfriend's job was heavy on the work hours and it happened. Love that we've moved. I love having my own place so far no regrets.

The start of August I interviewed for a position that would start in like a few days. I had a feeling  I was not going to get it -- I mean, I've been interviewing since 2016 and no one wanted me. But I am now in my second semester at this job -- it has its challenges due to the students and my medical problems but I'm still survivin'

ANYWAY TO THE BOOKS!!

Since I was unemployed for most of 2018 I had a LOT of time to read books. I didn't meet my 125 goal for the reading challenge on Goodreads. BUT I forgot to drop down the book count to match how many books I did make it through. Many consider that cheating but I'm just challenging myself so why does it matter?

My goal was to read a lot and remember most of them. I usually read through things so fast that by the end of the year I'm like.. I read that?? Me??? Are you sure?? So, the reviews help keep them in memory.

There's definitely more books but if we went through that..this would be a forever long blog entry. I have read a variety of books in 2018 and I'm glad it happened. I've found so many cute, educational children books to the fun, bizarre books for adults.

1. Binti by Nnedi Okorafor - Absolutely enjoyed this book. Finally braved up and reviewed it. Enjoyed it a lot didn't want to make a mess of the review for it. 
2. Daddy Darkest by Ellery A. Kane. This book was a trip from the first page to the last. It's entertaining, fast pace, and frustrating read. 
3. Heir Ascendant by Matthew S. Cox. Genetically perfected nine year old vs. her power hungry/controlling mother. She finds a new mother ...through a bizarre circumstance.
4. The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie. Lesbian/bi (idk no labels given) teenager who trains sea monsters to fight pirates. 
5. Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout. A YA romance where the male love interest is aggressive but not in a "run girl he's an abuser" way.

My Review:

I was worried about starting this. Would this have an end? Or, would it be similar to Hello, Moto and not have a proper ending?

This is the cutest dedication I've read in awhile. The story becomes alive and flows the moment you step into it.

It has just enough outsider feel but still familiar enough. Love the use of tech and biological for space travel. The use of mathematics as a comfort almost religion like was different for me.

There is a religion of some sort and isn't math.

Suddenness of events is only expected because this is a novella. But it is written well enough and doesn't cause whiplash due to changing scenes/ situations.

I was only a bit confused with Meduse and what they did to change her to be help with their mission.

I don't want to say a whole lot because this is REALLY short so I feel guilty getting into spoilers. 



Recommend?

If you like science fiction.. especially, afrofuturistism this is definitely a recommendation. But even if science fiction isn't your thing it is easy to digest and get into the story.

Hello, Moto Nnedi Okorafor Review

Summary:There is witchcraft in science and a science to witchcraft. Both will conspire against you eventually.

Review:
You step into a situation that is already in progress. Rain made tech with juju that's causing chaos in Nigeria. She wants to fix things so she works to fix it.. then it ends.

There's no resolution.  We walk into an already in progress problem... then we leave it without seeing how it ends.

That's why the 3 because it has no ending.

Tax Money Buys

I can't have physical copies of books. I don't have enough space for all the books I'd be buying so ebooks it is.

Tax story:  I did my taxes before my boyfriend -- he didn't give me his acct information to do it. So, to complete mine with my ally bank account. Except I don't have a bank card for it. So, I'm transferring money from it to my paypal to transfer to my boyfriends bank card.

I'm crossing my fingers I can buy & no extra medical expense show up. I already started The Book of Phoenix. I just want my own copies though.
